High potential and gifted education
The NSW Department of Education High Potential and Gifted Education (HPGE) policy ensures that all public schools explicitly identify and nurture students with high potential or giftedness across four key domains: intellectual, creative, social-emotional, and physical. Implemented as a mandatory framework, it promotes tailored, evidence-based teaching such as acceleration and enrichment to challenge students and support their wellbeing, engagement, and talent development.
Why choose us for your high potential or gifted child?
At Inverell Public School, we recognise that students have different strengths and learn in different ways. Some students may show high potential or gifted abilities in one or more areas, which can emerge at different stages of their schooling. We are committed to identifying and supporting these students so they feel confident, challenged and supported in their learning.
Creative Domain
Some students show strong creativity through imagination, original ideas and creative thinking. We provide opportunities for students to explore and extend their creativity through engaging classroom activities and enrichment experiences.
Intellectual Domain
Students may demonstrate advanced thinking and learning abilities. Teachers identify and support these students using observations, assessments and ongoing communication with families. Learning is differentiated to provide appropriate challenge and extension.
Physical Domain
Some students display high potential in physical abilities. We recognise and support these strengths through a range of physical activities and programs that help students develop skills and confidence.
Social-Emotional Domain
High potential and gifted students may have unique social and emotional needs. We work closely with students and families to support wellbeing, helping students feel valued, understood and supported in a positive learning environment.

What is high potential and gifted education?
High potential and gifted education (HPGE) is how our school supports students with advanced learning needs.
We do this through:
- effective teaching strategies like enrichment, extension and acceleration
- tailored support during lessons that stretch, challenge and inspire
- access to a wide range of opportunities both within and beyond our school.
Our high potential and gifted education opportunities
Our students engage with HPGE education in the classroom, in our school, and across NSW.
