Early Birds Transition Program
Starting primary school is a big step for children and families. Our school runs an Early Birds transition program to help your child feel ready for Kindergarten and to support you as parents and carers.
At Inverell Public School we pride ourselves on being a family-focused school that understands how busy life can be.
We are happy to work around family and work schedules to organise personalised IPS walk-around visits, giving you the opportunity to explore our school, meet our staff and see our learning spaces in action at a time that suits you.

Starting school is such an exciting milestone and at Inverell Public School we can’t wait to welcome our newest learners through the gates! 💛
Our unique Kindergarten Transition Program provides positive, supportive and nurturing early learning experiences to help every child feel confident and ready for Kindergarten.
Throughout the program, children will have opportunities to:
✨ develop important social and emotional skills
✨ engage in our caring and supportive school environment
✨ explore early literacy and numeracy skills
✨ gain confidence for a smooth and successful transition to Kindergarten
Through fun, engaging and hands-on learning experiences, children will begin building friendships, confidence and familiarity with school routines before their first official day.
With caring staff supporting every step of the journey, we look forward to welcoming our future IPS students and families into our school community!

Getting ready at home
You can help your child get ready by encouraging independence and routines.
Try:
- packing and unpacking their school bag
- dressing themselves and practising hygiene
- following simple routines at home.

What to expect in Kindergarten
Learning and development
Kindergarten follows the NSW curriculum. Children build early skills in literacy, numeracy, creative arts, health and physical activity, science and technology. Learning through play also supports social, emotional and academic growth.
Daily routines
Children learn routines such as morning arrival, snack and lunch breaks, lining up, using bubblers and moving safely around the school. Teachers guide children as they settle in, but practising at home helps.
Best Start Assessment
At the start of the year, all Kindergarten children take part in the Best Start Assessment. This is a friendly, one-on-one activity where teachers learn about your child’s literacy and numeracy skills. It is not a test and needs no preparation.
