You can be of help to your child by teaching him or her to carry out the following tasks:
- Tying own shoe laces (if possible) - flat laces more successful.
- Blowing and wiping nose.
- Putting on and removing raincoat, hat, jumper etc. and putting them in their bag.
- Matching correct shoe to the appropriate foot.
- Distinguishing between morning tea and lunch – open lunch container and school bag.
- Understanding that rubbish belongs in bins.
- Recognising own name in full.
- Ensuring that your boy can use a urinal correctly.
The following are some ways that you can help get your child ready for Kindergarten:
- Label everything belonging to your child and showing him or her where the label is. If all school bags look the same, put a different identifying label eg a coloured ribbon or pom pom tied to the name tag so they do not have to read every one!
- Listening – practise hearing instructions – the first time
- Please do not teach capital letters when writing their names as schools teach children to use upper and lower case.
- Keep the whole beginning process as low-key as possible. Too much build-up can generate nervousness and anxiety.
- Leave the school as soon as the beginner is settled on their first day.
- Going home arrangements. – child must know and teacher must know if any change.
- Talking positively about school to your child.
The most important gift you can give your child is your time and guidance.
